Live-in caregivers are individuals who are qualified to provide care for children, elderly persons or persons with disabilities in private homes without supervision. Live-in caregivers must live in the private home where they work in Canada.

If you have not worked in Canada under the Live-in Caregiver Program and your employer’s Labour Market Impact Assessment application was received by Service Canada after November 30, 2014:

If you have not worked in Canada under the Live-in Caregiver Program and your employer’s Labour Market Impact Assessment (LMIA) application was received by Service Canada on or before November 30, 2014:

  •  you may apply for a Live-in Caregiver Program (LCP) work permit.

If you already have a LCP work permit and you want to extend it or change jobs to work with another employer who agrees to a live-in arrangement:

If you choose to live outside of your employer’s home, you will no longer be part of the Live-in Caregiver Program.  In this instance:

ELIGIBILITY FOR THE LIVE-IN CAREGIVER PROGRAM

You will need:

  • A positive Labour Market Impact Assessment (LMIA) from an employer in Canada
  • A written contract for your future employment, signed by you and the employer
  • Successful completion of the equivalent of a Canadian secondary school education
  • At least six months’ training or at least one year of full-time paid work experience as a caregiver or in a related field or occupation (including six months with one employer) in the past three years
  • Good knowledge of English or French
  • A work permit before you enter Canada

 CAREGIVERS: CARING FOR CHILDRENcaregiver

If you have work experience in Canada as a child care provider in a private home, you may be able to apply for permanent residence through the Caring for Children Pathway.

You must meet all of these requirements to be eligible for the Caring for Children Pathway.

You must have at least 24 months of full-time work experience in Canada as a home child care provider in the four years (48 months) before you apply

  • Full-time work means at least 30 hours of paid work per week
  • Breaks in employment are allowed (for example, periods of unemployment, long periods of sickness, parental leave)
  • Any work experience you had while you were a full-time student will not count towards the work experience requirement

You must have cared for children under the age of 18, whether in your own home or in your employer’s home. You do not need to have lived in your employer’s home to qualify

 CAREGIVERS: CARING FOR PEOPLE WITH HIGH MEDICAL NEEDS

Work experience

You must meet all of these requirements to be eligible for the Caring for People with High Medical Needs Pathway.

  • You must have at least 24 months of full-time work experience in Canada in the four years (48 months) before you apply in one of the following jobs:
    • Registered nurses and registered psychiatric nurses
    • Licensed practical nurses
    • Nurse aides, orderlies and patient service associates
    • Home support workers and related occupations
      • Note: Only Home support workers are eligible under NOC 4412. Housekeepers are not eligible.

Full-time work means at least 30 hours of paid work per week. Breaks in employment are allowed (for example, periods of unemployment, long periods of sickness, parental leave).

If your work experience in Canada was obtained as a registered nurse or registered psychiatric nurse or as a licensed practical nurse, you must:

  • prove that you are licensed to practice in Canada
  • provide proof that you are registered with the regulatory body, as required, in your province/territory at the time you apply
